I try to find and analyze symbol in movies. I considere especially David Lynch as extremely clear ;) Let's go
At 29 minutes, Fred Madison meet a weird man during a cocktail. This man proposes hime to call at his home and he'll hang up himself, being at both places at the same time. Here, you've gor a snapshot of the hand of Fred.
Do you have an explanation? Here is mine: This discrete symbol is half a monad. I considere this movie as the best representation I know in modern art about the observer principle of quantum mechanics. Fred and pete (the other figure appearing mysteriously at the place of Fred in jail) are the same character but they are different depending on the observer. As you are the same one in front of the screen, you see two different actors. However, Fred is an half of an unseccable "One". The symbole appears just at the moment when the weird man is at two different places at the same time, that is exactly the property of a quantum object.

The main characters receives successively 3 roses... I think Coppola is maybe a rosicrucian. Indeed, he is transforming himself according the 3 stages, represented by 3 roses, described by one of the schools (gold school) of the Rose-Croix faith: First is the purification (in the movie, the man is hit by a light), the second is the service of the others (In the movie, the man is making a lot of research about solutions to help humanity), The third is the reintegration in the body (at the end of the movie, the hero come back to Romania, become old again then die).
